Seat of War, 1775

Three maps share one sheet: a regional view of eastern Massachusetts showing troop marches converging on Boston, a plan of Boston Harbor, and a close-up of the Battle of Bunker Hill with Charlestown in flames. Robert Sayer and John Bennett published this composite in London on September 2, 1775, drawn 'by an American volunteer.' Hand-colored in yellow, green, and pink, it was designed to help a British audience follow the opening weeks of the war from across the Atlantic.

  • In the Bunker Hill inset, the burning buildings of Charlestown are visible. The British set the town on fire during their assault.
  • The troop march lines on the regional map; they converge on Boston from Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire.
  • The prime meridian references both London and Boston, with dual notation along the top edge.
