Boston with Building Views, 1835

Twenty finely rendered views of public and commercial buildings frame the city plan, turning the map into a civic portrait. Boston's population statistics are printed directly on the sheet. The Back Bay is still tidal marsh, and the street grid ends abruptly at the water's edge where fill projects will soon begin. G.W. Boynton engraved the map for the Boston Bewick Company, a firm known for its wood-engraving work.

  • The twenty building vignettes around the border. They include churches, markets, and the commercial buildings that defined 1830s Boston.
  • The population statistics printed on the map stand in contrast to the compact footprint of the peninsula.
  • The western edge of the city where hachure marks show the hills. These would soon be cut down to fill the Back Bay.

All prints are high-quality reproductions made from museum-grade scans at 300 DPI. Depending on the original scan dimensions, some prints may include white fill along the edges.
